Empowering coastal community on access to low-carbon technology
Azura’s community development team has spent the last 10 months engaging with local fishermen in coastal communities, focusing on the adoption of the Manta One engine, a marine electric vehicle (EV) designed to support sustainable fishing practices. Despite the potential benefits, transitioning from traditional combustion engines presents challenges, necessitating broader outreach and education efforts.
Fieldwork in Lovina revealed a blend of traditional and modern practices among fishermen, some of whom have diversified into eco-tourism, such as dolphin-watching tours. The socialization sessions with various fishermen groups, including the Sinar Bahari Fishermen Group, provided insights into their daily routines, expenses, and the economic impact of transitioning to marine EVs.
In-depth interviews with fishermen across Bali highlighted their reliance on the sea for livelihood, the operational costs associated with traditional fishing methods, and the potential for Manta One to offer a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative. These narratives underscore the critical role of the fishing industry in Indonesia’s economy and the potential impact of Manta One technology on empowering local communities.
Key activities
Stakeholder Engagement
Azura IDN conducted Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with key stakeholders in Bali and nationally to explore the potential of marine electric vehicles (EVs) in coastal communities. These discussions aimed to gather insights on implementation challenges, opportunities, and stakeholder perspectives. By engaging with both local and national actors, Azura IDN sought to identify pathways for successfully introducing marine EVs in Indonesia's coastal regions.
Community Outreach
Azura IDN conducted a comprehensive socialization campaign to introduce Manta One to five target fishing communities in Bali Island. The campaign focused on raising awareness about the benefits of marine electric vehicles and identifying potential participants for a pilot project utilizing Manta One technology.
Training Manual Development
Azura IDN has developed a comprehensive training manual for fishermen to facilitate the effective operation and maintenance of Manta One electric boats. This manual provides detailed instructions, troubleshooting guides, and safety procedures to empower fishermen to maximize the benefits of this sustainable technology.
Impact of the Project
Total Community : 22 KN
Total Fishermen : 112 People
Response : 86% of fishermen want to have a sea trial to see and try real capability MantaOne
Feedback :
- need bigger engine with outboard model
- prefer to own engine and battery by themselves
- battery pack capacity minim 4 hours with current dimension
